I am a great nephew of Sergeant James Johnston, M.M. Who served with the QOOH in WW1. Thank you for the detail of his service. Little is known about his life and death. Most of my research has been done online, but it is so difficult when you are dealing with Johnston, Johnson and Johnstone.
I would say, however, that James was born in Dumfries, Scotland on 17 November 1885.
In the 1911 census, he was a groom at Nunthorpe Hall near York. I believe his employer was Col. A D Miller. I understand that the Colonel and James went to USA to purchase horses for the Oxfordshire Hunt.
